Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan on Friday took oath as a Rajya Sabha member, and the superstar took his oath in Tamil.

The 69-year-old MNM Chief, while talking to the media outside the parliament earlier, said, "I am very proud and honoured."

Kamal Haasan In Rajya Sabha

The 'Thug Life' actor had filed his nomination on June 6 at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, and DMK allies.

On June 12, Kamal Haasan and five others were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.

The five others elected are DMK's Poet Salma (A Rokkaiah Malik), SR Sivalingam, P Wilson (who enters his second term), and AIADMK's IS Inbadurai and Dhanapal.

This is a significant milestone in Kamal Haasan's political journey, as he assumed a national legislative role for the first time. The actor-turned-politician was nominated with the support of the ruling DMK-led alliance.

According to ANI, the Tamil Nadu ruling party had promised Kamal Haasan a seat in the Upper House in exchange for the support of MNM during the Lok Sabha elections of 2024. The actor’s party did not contest in the polls and extended full support to the alliance.

Meanwhile, in the 2021 Assembly elections, MNM had secured 2.62 percent of the vote share.

Tamil Nadu Assembly

In the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, a candidate requires a minimum of 34 votes to win a seat in the Upper House.

With 158 MLAs from the DMK-led INDIA bloc (DMK-133, Congress-17, VCK-4, CPI-2, CPM-2), the alliance was positioned to secure four seats.
