Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport were significantly disrupted on Wednesday evening as heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across the national capital, forcing the diversion of at least 13 flights.

According to airport sources, 12 of the affected flights were rerouted to Jaipur, while one international flight was diverted to Mumbai due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi.

Airlines and the airport authorities sent out warning messages on social media, informing passengers of possible delays and disruptions. One of the leading carriers from Delhi, IndiGo, posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Our flight schedules are currently impacted due to the heavy rains and thunderstorm sweeping across Delhi, Chandigarh and Kolkata."

The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), operator of IGI Airport, also made a statement on X, warning passengers: "Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms in Delhi, flight operations may get impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience."

Other airlines such as Air India and SpiceJet repeated the same. Air India tweeted, “Rain and thunderstorms may disrupt flights to/from Delhi this evening.” SpiceJet added, "Due to bad weather (thunderstorm with heavy rain) in Delhi (DEL), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Additionally, traffic movement to the airport might be affected due to heavy rains."

The weather disruptions come amid increased travel demand for the summer season, adding to the woes of both airlines and travelers. The India Meteorological Department had previously issued predictions of thunderstorms and light showers in Delhi, which is struggling with scorching heat and humidity.

Travelers have been instructed to verify the status of their flight with relevant airlines before arriving at the airport.
