Following the incident, police registered a case under relevant sections based on a complaint filed by the deceased student’s relatives.
“Police reached the spot and did the 'panchayatnama'. Relatives have reached the spot. As per their complaint, an FIR has been registered under relevant sections,” ADCP Kumar said.
Police have since taken two individuals into custody for questioning in connection with the case.
“Two accused have been taken into custody for questioning. Students were agitated over Sharda University's administration. They were pacified. The situation is under control. Further action is being undertaken," ADCP Kumar added.
The university is yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident.
The suicide case at a university in Greater Noida follows closely on the heels of another tragedy in Balasore, Odisha, where a 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College died after allegedly attempting self-immolation to protest prolonged sexual harassment by her department head.
The incident took place on July 12, and the student died two days later at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Following the incident, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has sent a fact-finding team to investigate the circumstances.
Speaking to the media, a member of the UGC fact-finding team, Professor Sushma Yadav, said they have begun their investigation, reviewed documents and spoken to relevant officials and students. She stressed the importance of a thorough fact-finding investigation to help prevent such tragedies in the future.
The senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Pratap Jena criticised the state government's response to the incident and said, "Crimes against women are increasing every day in Odisha. We demand a judicial inquiry into this case. Instead of a judicial inquiry, they got a crime branch inquiry headed by one DSP. We criticise this."
Meanwhile, Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das demanded an answer from Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi as to why an FIR was not registered in this case.
