As soon as they received the news, Jhalawar Collector and SP Amit Kumar Budania rushed to the spot. "3-4 students killed as roof of Piplodi Primary School in Jhalawar collapses. Several students injured," news agency ANI quoted SP Jhalawar Amit Kumar as saying. Early reports suggested that around 60 to 70 students were at school when the roof collapsed.
A harrowing video from the site of the incident captured volatile scenes as hundreds of villagers, distraught parents among them, struggled to clear the rubble. A bulldozer can be seen being used in rescue operations, but most locals are trying in vain to manually remove collapsed bricks in a bid to get survivors out.
Seventeen injured children have been admitted to a local hospital. Images from the hospital show medical personnel tending to the children, with worried families waiting outside to receive information on their relatives. Some of the most injured students have been referred to the Jhalawar District Hospital.

Authorities are carrying out extensive rescue efforts at the site. The accident has triggered serious doubts over the safety of the building structure of the school, which villagers allegedly asserted was in a state of disrepair for quite a while, with no work done to repair or rebuild it despite repeated grievances. The cause of the collapse and any negligence involved is likely to be investigated.
