Ahmedabad Mock Drill LIVE: In response to escalating tensions with Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed all states and Union territories to conduct a large-scale civil defence mock drill on Wednesday, May 7. The drills will be carried out across more than 250 districts in India to assess preparedness for potential "hostile" threats, including air raids and mass evacuations.

Ahmedabad, one of Gujarat's key urban centres, is among the 244 identified civil defence districts gearing up for the mock exercise. The MHA’s directive aims to enhance the country’s emergency response capacity and readiness in light of evolving security threats.

The Directorate General of Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards, in a recent communication, underlined the urgent need for such drills given the changing nature of modern threats. The move is part of the Centre’s wider effort to ensure better coordination and preparedness across local and national agencies.

Ahmedabad Mock Drills LIVE: Things to know

Here are key safety steps and preparedness tips to follow during the civil defence drill:

Understand the siren signals:

A long continuous siren means an air-raid alert—take shelter immediately.

Short, repeated sirens indicate that it’s safe and the all-clear has been given.

Identify nearby shelters such as:

Basements

Underground parking areas

Designated safe zones in your locality

Prepare an emergency kit with:

A flashlight

Bottled water

Basic medicines

A list of emergency contact numbers

Halt all outdoor activities as soon as the siren sounds.

Move quickly to the nearest shelter and stay there until authorities declare it safe.

Implement blackout precautions by:

Turning off all lights

Using thick curtains or blinds

Covering or switching off screens and devices that emit light (TVs, phones, etc.)

Conduct blackout drills at home to check your family’s readiness.

Report any suspicious activity or unknown individuals in your area to the nearest authorities.

Join community training programs, especially those on:

First aid

Emergency preparedness for children

How to identify safe areas at home or school

Ensure vulnerable members, like senior citizens and children, are involved in every part of the safety drill.

Ahmedabad Mock Drill LIVE: What to keep in emergency kit?

During the mock drills, people are advised to keep emergency kits ready at home with essentials like first aid supplies, flashlights, candles, and some cash. This is to ensure they can manage during power outages or medical emergencies, especially if mobile networks or digital payments stop working.

The Centre has stated that these nationwide drills are part of efforts to boost civil defence readiness in the event of a potential conflict between India and Pakistan.
