A complete blackout was enforced across parts of Jammu and Kashmir late Wednesday night after suspected Pakistani drones and a low-range missile targeted sensitive military zones, including the Jammu airport. Sirens blared across the Akhnoor sector and other parts of the Jammu Division, including Samba, as explosions were reported near the airport area. Residents were urged to stay indoors as security forces heightened surveillance and response measures under high alert.

According to defence sources, the Indian armed forces successfully intercepted a low-range missile fired from across the border. In addition, a Pakistani drone was shot down near Jammu, preventing what could have been a major security breach.
Simultaneous drone activity was also reported in Udhampur, Akhnoor, and Pathankot, sparking concerns over coordinated aerial threats. Authorities ordered a precautionary blackout in multiple areas to minimize visibility of strategic targets and prevent any potential civilian harm.
As of now, no casualties have been reported. Security forces continue to scan the airspace and conduct counter-drone operations as tensions remain elevated in the region following India’s Operation Sindoor.
While tensions mounted after India's Operation Sindoor, Pakistan on Thursday ratcheted up hostilities by firing loitering munitions at military installations in Jammu. Indian Air Defence systems retaliated, while total blackouts were imposed in all Jammu, Kishtwar, and Akhnoor in the Jammu Division. Sirens were sounded in all districts as a precautionary measure.
The escalation comes after India's precision attacks on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK) following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead. While addressing the media on Thursday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that India's response has been "restrained, targeted, and limited to non-civilian, non-military installations.
"The original escalation was by Pakistan on April 22. We are merely responding to that," Misri said. "Further action by Pakistan, some of which we are witnessing today, is a fresh escalation and will be responded to appropriately."
Misri reaffirmed that India does not wish for further escalation, observing, "Our responses are measured and focused solely on terror infrastructure."
During a top-level all-party meeting, the government announced that more than 100 terrorists were eliminated in India's pre-dawn raids on Wednesday. The Defence Ministry, meanwhile, confirmed that Pakistani drones and missiles tried to strike various Indian cities, including Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Phalodi, and Bhuj, on the evening of May 7.
"These threats were neutralised by India’s Integrated Counter-UAS Grid and Air Defence systems," the ministry stated, adding that debris from intercepted attacks has been recovered from several locations, proving evidence of Pakistan's offensive.
In a retaliatory action on Thursday morning, Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence radars and systems in Pakistan, reportedly neutralising a crucial facility in Lahore.
While this was going on, Pakistan stepped up unprovoked artillery firing across the Line of Control (LoC) by mortars and heavy artillery in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. The barrage killed 16 civilians, among them three women and five children.
The Defence Ministry asserted India's de-escalation commitment by saying:
"India will act only in response to provocation and remains committed to maintaining peace—provided it is reciprocated by Pakistan."
The situation still remains volatile with increased military alertness on the border and in the skies.
