US President Donald Trump on Saturday issued a letter announcing new tariffs on imports from Mexico and the European Union. According to the letter, goods from both regions will be subject to a 30 per cent tariff rate starting August 1.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump shared the tariff letters addressed to Mexico and the European Union.
In a letter to the Mexican president, the white house said, “It is a Great Honor for me to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strength and commitment of our Trading Relationship, and the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Mexico.”
“Mexico has been helping me secure the border, BUT, what Mexico has done, is not enough. Mexico still has not stopped the Cartels who are trying to turn all of North America into a Narco-Trafficking Playground. Obviously, I cannot let that happen!,” the letter added.
Meanwhile, in a letter to the European Commission, Trump said that from August 1, 2025, the US will charge a 30 per cent tariff on imports European Union.
“Starting on August 1, 2025, we will charge The European Union a Tariff of only 30% on EU products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs. Goods transshipped to evade a higher Tariff will be subject to that higher Tariff,” the letter read.
Earlier, US President Trump announced that the US will impose a tariff of 35 per cent on imports of goods from Canada. Trump sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to inform him about the tariff.
"As you will recall, the United States imposed Tariffs on Canada to deal with our Nation's Fentanyl crisis, which is caused, in part, by Canada's failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our Country. Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own Tariffs. Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a Tariff of 35% on Canadian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," the letter read.
