TRAI Traceability Rules: To tackle spam SMS and phishing attacks, TRAI has directed telecom providers Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL to enforce the traceability rule starting December 1. The traceability rule will track commercial messages and OTP messages. Notably, TRAI has decided to strictly implement it in all telecom companies.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced measures to protect individuals from scams and online fraud.
TRAI instructed telecom companies to ensure traceability of commercial messages and OTPs, a decision announced in August.
Earlier, the telecom regulator had asked the providers to implement the rule by October 1, 2024, then extended to November 1, and now the last date has been set to December 1 after requests from Jio, Airtel, VI, and BSNL.
If implemented on December 1, these measures may cause delays in receiving OTP messages.
This initiative addresses scams involving fake OTP messages, which often lead to significant financial losses.
From January 1, 2025, new regulations will help accelerate 5G infrastructure development.
The new RoW rule standardises costs for deploying infrastructure, replacing state-specific charges with a unified approach.
