Days after imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, a senior aide to US President Donald Trump criticised India for continuing to buy Russian oil and accused it of indirectly financing Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Trump's deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, a key advisor to Donald Trump, stated that the former president firmly believes India must halt its purchase of Russian oil. “What he (Trump) made absolutely clear is that it is not acceptable for India to keep financing this war by buying oil from Russia,” Miller said on Sunday Morning Futures.

On Fox News, Miller said, "People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil. That's an astonishing fact."

Meanwhile, India has not yet responded to the matter.

Trump 25% Tariff

On July 30, US President Donald Trump announced that India would face a 25 per cent tariff starting August 1. While shearing his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump also warned that India would be penalised for continuing to buy military equipment and energy from Russia.

"Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country," Trump said.

While pointing out India’s ongoing military and energy ties with Russia, Trump said, ""Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE"
