US President Donald Trump made the news today that he will be having a much-awaited summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday, August 15, 2025, in Alaska. The meeting is likely to center mainly around initiatives to secure a peace agreement to stop the current war between Russia and Ukraine.

The announcement came via Trump's Truth Social account, where he wrote: "The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" This marks Putin's first visit to the U.S. in a decade, signaling a potential diplomatic shift.

Earlier in the day at the White House, after signing a historic Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement, President Trump suggested that big developments were made on the Russia-Ukraine file. "I arrived, and this entire world was burning, and all these things were really occurring. We have been here only six months. The world was burning, and we did just about everything to take care of every fire, and we're very strongly dealing with another one with Russia and Ukraine. We will have some further information for you a little while later," Trump said.

He reiterated that his "highest aspiration is to bring peace and stability in the world."

When questioned further regarding the Russia-Ukraine peace process while addressing the Armenia-Azerbaijan situation, Trump continued, "Russia, as you know, lost nearly 25,000 over the past month and a half. Ukraine lost a few, and many people are dying, and we're getting very close and will announce later. We will have a meeting with Russia, and we will announce a place. The place will be a very, very popular one for many reasons. We will make the announcement a little later, and don't want to do it now because of the significance of what we just did."

When it comes to the level of negotiations, Trump expressed confidently, "We are very close to a deal. Working with European countries, who are great people and leaders, is wonderful through NATO. I got very good with them and agreed to increase from 2 per cent to 5 per cent that they already paid. And we are working very closely together. In fairness to President Zelensky, he is receiving everything he wants, presuming we will get something accomplished. I will be meeting very shortly with President Putin. It would have been sooner, but I suppose there are security arrangements that regretfully people must make."

Trump also implied that a possible agreement to stop the war in Ukraine would entail a multifaceted swapping of territory. "It's very complicated. But we're going to get some [territory] back, and we're going to get some switched. There'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we'll be talking about that either later, or tomorrow," he added.

The suggested meet is in line with Trump's self-imposed deadline for Russia to sign an agreement on a ceasefire in Ukraine that expired without new assurances, and amid Ukraine and its European allies' long-standing opposition to any deal that requires surrender of occupied territory. The Kremlin has yet to officially confirm the meeting as declared by Trump, but both states had indicated an imminent summit.
